The Scrabo quarries were worked from at the least the beginning of the eighteenth century by Henry Darley and his sons.
The north quarry yielded flagstones while blocks of superior architectural grade sandstone were raised from the quarry in the south. The stone varies greatly in colour and quality; careful selection of stone was important.
