Three quarries located 1km north of Doon village (6km east of Cappamore), each 100m southeast, north and west of a Well marked on OS Historic 25" map. Not marked on OS Historic 6" map. Not marked on Griffith Valuation maps - land owner by Earl of Clonmel. Samuel Lewis (1837) noted stone was being used in Limerick city for public buildings and being exported to England. According to Kinahan (1889, p. 278) this freestone was "specially fine ... at one time largely shipped to England and other places." Could be raised in long scantlings and so suitable for use for staircases. Also used in St Michael's Church (RC), Tipperary town (1859) (which also used Clonoulty stone).References
