Series of adjacent quarries in Doonagore Townland and one straddling Ballyvara and Cronagort West Townlands, 4 km northeast of O'Brien's Tower, Cliffs of Moher. SW quarry marked on earlier map and all three larger in later OS map. Largest of the nineteenth century quarries of Liscannor Flagstone. George A. Watson took over c. 1890 and built Doonagore village with Post Office and houses for workers. Combined with United Stone Firms inabout 1910 when at least six quarries were operated. Marketed as 'Shamrock Stone'. Watson employed 140 persons, 20 inside and 120 outside (1904 Quarry listing). From 1910 shipped by the United Stones Firm ships from Liscannor Harbour to Briton Ferry Glamorganshire from where it was transported across Britain by train. Used in London, Cardiff, Swansea, Liverpool. The company owned five steamers including S.S. Liscannor and S.S. Mountcharles (United Stone Firms brochure 1911). Doonagore not mentioned in Kinahan 1887. Closed c. 1915. Watson died 1930.References
