Notes:
Located on a former island that was surrounded by bog, now drained and farmland.
The church is a late Hiberno-Romanesque building with the west door and chancel arch cut in red sandstone. The east window and the twin windows on the south wall of the nave are later Gothic additions. A barrel vaulted room is found to the north side of the church which at one time had a second chamber above it (Wyse Jackson 1936, p. 3). Four buildings were present when Lewis (1837) reported on the site [the Church; an Oratory; Abbey remains with a room for the Abbot; Women's Church] but by 100 years later all but one remained. The Women's Church that was located to the north of the church at Monaincha has largely disappeared except for a piece of Gothic doorway or window. The church was removed in the early 1800s but the western archway was re-erected as a garden gate at a local house Birchgrove. The annex to the church still standing is probably equivalent to the Abbot's room (Harbison 1992, pp. 131-132).
A high cross was re-erected in the 1940s (OPW website)
Labelled as 'Inchanameo Abbey' on OSI maps.
