"... around Boyle... there is excellent limestone of a light blueish grey colour, which becomes whiter on being worked, and from which large blocks could be obtained, if properly quarried. This variety is, however only local, the prevailing rock being an impure calp-like dark coloured stone. At the time of erection [1809] of Rockingham House, near Boyle, the fact that this stone occurred in the vicinity was unknown, and limestone was obtained from Ballinafad at considerable expense, having to be carted for several miles, while as good a stone was lying close at hand."
