Notes:
Situated 4.5 miles from Monaghan town, this quarry supplied ornamental stone for the quoins & c. in Monaghan RC Cathedral. Hunt (1858) stated that this quarry produced Old Red Sandstone, however it is situated in the Maydown Limestone Formation (Carboniferous), which consists of argillaceous limestones and siltstones. The stone is medium grained, greyish cream colour and does not contain fossils; it may be a sandy limestone bed within the limestone formation. Cost of stone was 21s. per ton in 1858.References
