Notes:
The Killala Oolite Member is contained in the Mullaghmore Sandstone Formation as a subordinate but distinctive lithological unit 35 feet in thickness (Symes 1879, p. 17). This stone was used for Moyne Abbey, Rosserk Abbey, Killala Roundtower and more recently for St Muredach's Cathedral (RC), Ballina built between 1827 and 1837. Hull (in Symes 1879, p. 28) provided a petrographic description of the oolitic nature of the stone but was unable to explain the formation of the ooids. They are now known to represent marine deposition in very small water.References
