Borris Railway viaduct

Notes:

A viaduct of sixteen arches, now used as a walkway. Erected by the Bagenalstown and Wexford Railway Company to carry the Bagenalstown to Palace East line. The engineer overseeing its construction was William Richard Le Fanu (1816–1894) (brother of the novelist Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu). Built of granite and limestone. The granite was collected as fieldstones locally or from Kilcloney Quarry (operated by William Perrin) (and stone carried by a specially laid tramway) and possibly Dog Pond Quarry, O'Brien's Lane, Borris (Conry 2006, p. 196), or from quarries on Mount Leinster (Interpretative signs at Viaduct). Limestone was quarried from Ballyellin, just north of Goresbridge. This quarry was served by a siding from the main railway line and it was intended to carry stone to Wexford; however, the line terminated at Ballywilliam.
