Notes:
Built of rubble masonry with a plinth of local red granite (probably Ox Mountains Granodiorite that crops out 5km north of Straide near Lough Cullin) - the quarry has not been located. Above the plinth the walls are faced with hammered, rock finished snecked dark grey Saleen Limestone from near Castlebar Railway Station with pale grey Ardbraccan Limestone dressings around windows. In window arches red granite block alternate with Saleen limestone. Inside Connemara Marble is used for decorative columns, Portland Stone for nave column bases and capitals, and the altar is of Sicilian White Marble. It was intended to call the church the Davitt Memorial Church, but Davitt in his will stated that he didn't want any public monument. Cost £4,000 = €625,000 today. Saleen Limestone was transported by rail from Cartlebar to Ballyvary Station.References
